Day 3 - April 5th 2022

The turmoil of emotions is relaxing and I am finding my feet again. eager to travel and meet people along the way. My first few days were very lonely, perhaps a mix of my subconscious desires and need to process my feelings. I’m getting short videos done but that has presented me with new worries about the way I approach this new life. I don’t know that my power demands are going to be met. It’s still early and I’m still experimenting, but it does seem that to edit and post a video uses much more power than I anticipated. The coming weeks will be another long learning experiment.

Aside from my power worries the weather has turned. Though it is deep into spring, a cold front has washed over northern Nevada and Utah. I think my time in the north will be short lived as I see temperatures well below freezing in the coming weeks. Perhaps I should have waited to fill my water tank until May. I plan to head south and see if I can’t escape the sub 20 degree nights.

This is my fourth time in the Bonneville Salt Flats area and each time I have visited a slightly different part of the playa and surrounding mountains, all within a few miles of each other and each offering some incredible new thing. During my grand kick of trip with Brad and Ed they had a dog free camping night on a hike and talked about the birds circling overhead at night and hearing their wing beats in incredible volume. There are two nests of crows or ravens nearby me and their wings cut the silence of this place like haunted drums. The whooshing sounds of the feathers cutting the air is loud and somewhat intimidating though I know they won’t approach me, especially with Lucy here. At sunset they danced along a nearby cliff either playing or fighting with one another and squawking so loudly I couldn’t hear my podcast well over my speakers. Hard to blame a bird for ruining a moment, but I tried and squawked at them in frustration.

Tomorrow I head to SLC to meet with an old friend Ryan. I am excited to see a familiar face and enjoy company again.
